Founded in 2007, the Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery is the only spine organization solely dedicated to improving and advancing the field of minimally invasive spine surgery, through education, research and advocacy. SMISS brings together thought-leaders and pioneers in the world of minimally invasive spine surgery and provides a forum for the exchange of ideas and information. Education and training in minimally invasive spine surgery will help ensure the competency of surgeons advancing their MIS techniques and provide better care to patients.
SMISS pursues its mission of advancing minimally invasive spine surgery through a number of initiatives, including:
- Annual SMISS Meeting – each fall, SMISS members and physicians interested in advancing their own MIS techniques gather to present exciting new MIS cases, participate in hands-on cadaveric labs, and earn CME credits. Click here to learn more about the 2013 SMISS Annual Meeting.
- SMISS Core Curriculum – in an effort to provide surgeons with foundational knowledge in MIS techniques, SMISS created the Core Curriculum. This web-based program features didactic lectures on patient selection, operative pre-planning, intra-operative imaging and monitoring as well as procedural steps for an array of MIS techniques. - SMISS Abstract Database – SMISS has created a comprehensive database to allow surgeons, industry, and students to easily search and reference the hundreds of patient cases presented at past SMISS meetings. Click here to search the SMISS Abstract Database.
- SMISS Education – SMISS education will redefine educational opportunities for MISS. SMISS is in the process of building a completely new platform to deliver certification in MISS techniques (knowledge, know how, and skills – including practice based assessment). We are currently defining the objectives necessary to initiate this process. Our goal is to define and identify necessary training that will lead to better outcomes. Our commitment to minimally invasive spine surgery puts us in the enviable position as a market leader and gives us the opportunity to play a defining role in the education and training of future surgeons globally.
