SMISS Core Curriculum

The purpose of the SMISS Core Curriculum is to provide a foundation of knowledge from which surgeons may develop a minimally invasive spine practice.  Although it does not guarantee competency, the program will identify the fundamental educational activities necessary to perform specific MIS procedures.

SMISS will collaborate with various independent educational programs to provide a comprehensive listing of SMISS approved courses that will satisfy the different components of the SMISS Core Curriculum.

The recommended course content will include lectures and cadaveric lab activities.  Components of the Core Curriculum may be completed in separate sessions.  Once a physician has completed all required components of a specific core curriculum track, SMISS will issue a certificate of completion. The four SMISS Core Curriculum Tracks include:

  1. MIS Pedicle Screw Instrumentation Core Curriculum
  2. MIS TLIF Core Curriculum
  3. MIS Lateral (LLIF/DLIF) Core Curriculum
  4. MIS Lumbar Hemilaminectomy (MIS Laminaplasty) Core Curriculum
