What are the benefits of SMISS Membership?
- Discounted registration fees to SMISS Annual Meeting as well as other partners' related to minimally invasive spine surgery.

- Be the first to receive our Annual Newsletter.
- Recognition as a Member of an international society dedicated to improving patient care by advancing the practice of effective minimally invasive spine surgery through education, research and advocacy.
- Receive a free copy of the Spine Arthroplasty Society Journal.
SMISS Membership Policy:
- All members must meet one of the following criteria:
a. Board certified or eligible by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
b. Board certified or eligible by the American Board of Neurological Surgery.
c. Board certified or eligible by the American Osteopathic Board of Neurological Surgery.
d. Board certified or eligible by the American Osteopathic Board of Orthopedic Surgery.
- Must hold an unrestricted license to practice medicine with no disciplinary actions in the last 5 years.
- International members must be certified in their respective boards from their country.
- All applicants must have previously attended an SMISS Annual meeting or must attend an SMISS Annual meeting in the first year after becoming a member, and once every three years thereafter.
- All applicants must provide the names of three MIS Surgeon references preferably an SMISS founding member or Board Member.Browse our database to find an SMISS Member.
- All new member applicants must submit a letter outlining their MIS experience.
- All memberships are reviewed every 3 years to determine continued eligibility as a member of SMISS.
- SMISS members in good standing are committed to performing minimally invasive spine surgery in a manner consistent with evidence based medicine and peer-reviewed standards of care.
- All new member applications will be submitted to the SMISS Membership Committee quarterly. The Membership Committee will confirm eligibility and finalize a list of nominees. The list of nominees will then be forwarded to the Board of Directors for final approval.
- The current mandate of SMISS is to maintain a small number of active members who have shown a commitment to the field of minimally invasive spine surgery through participation in national MIS meetings and safe, effective application of MIS techniques in the care of their patients.
- The annual membership dues for SMISS are $475.
