Image Guidance to Decrease Radiation Exposure during Minimally Invasive Surgery
Author: Dr. Choll Kim, MD, University of California, San Diego
Background: Minimally invasive surgery decreases post-operative pain and disability. However, limited views of the surgical field require extensive use of intra-operative fluoroscopy which may expose the surgical team to higher levels of ionizing radiation.
Purpose: To assess the feasibility and safety of navigation-assisted fluoroscopy during minimally invasive spine surgery. Cadaveric study shows 50% decrease fluoroscopy use.
Additional benefits of NAV-MiS include:
- No lead gowns
- Clear surgical field
